With help I lifted the damp sheet of paper up and over, onto the waiting board. This was quite scary. After removing air pockets, I fixed it to the edge of the board with dampened gummed tape before leaving it to dry.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - VICTORIA BOLIVIANA - A NEW SPECIES OF GIANT WATERLILY: 4th july 2022 - “Victoria regia - Analyses” lithograph by Walter Hood Fitch, published in his 1851 work “ Victoria regia; Illustrations of the Royal Waterlily, in a series of figures chiefly made from specimens flowering at Syon and at Kew by Walter Fitch; with descriptions by Sir W. J. Hooker” Walter Hood Fitch was a prolific botanical artist who made illustrations for Kew from 1834 - 1877. He had previously illustrated Victoria from preserved specimens collected in Bolivia by Mr Bridges in 1845, which were given to William Hooker, the Director of Kew, to study. I later discovered that the herbarium specimen made from that plant is now proven to be the oldest known collection of the new species, Victoria boliviana. It had been misidentified as V. amazonica for an amazing 177 years! But that is a story for another blog….</image:title>

      <image:title>Blog - VICTORIA BOLIVIANA - A NEW SPECIES OF GIANT WATERLILY: 4th july 2022 - It was not always possible to cut a flower for my studies. In this case, the flower was needed for hand-pollination and seed production, so photography had to suffice. The first-night flower of this Victoria amazonica plant in the Princess of Wales Conservatory at Kew, was still open at around 7am, in July 2019. It quickly began to close for the day. Later the same evening, it would re-open, changing form and colour dramatically. These changes reflect the pollination process in the wild. Second-night flowers tend to open much later in the evening. In order to observe these I had special permission to stay in the glasshouse after dark, along with a generous volunteer from the horticultural team. Getting everything to line up was a challenge, and even once the people were in place, the flowers did NOT always co-operate! Photo: Jean-Michel Touche</image:title>

      <image:caption>The beautiful second-night flower of Victoria boliviana which opened at Kew on July 18th, 2018. It faced away from the viewing path of the Princess of Wales Conservatory, so I had to balance my camera on top of the high wall of the pond. I was always fearful it would fall in! This flower opened so quickly, I missed a part of the process thanks to making a cup of tea. Once it appeared to have finished opening, it was cut for me and I began a long night of photographing, dissecting and drawing. (c)LucyTSmith</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - VICTORIA BOLIVIANA - A NEW SPECIES OF GIANT WATERLILY: 4th july 2022 - Drawing informs taxonomy: as I drew the buds of all three species, I began to notice that the carpellary appendages (drawn darker here) which surround the ovary’s stigmatic surface, were a unique shape for each species. This “character” is a new way to tell the species apart, and can be observed in both living material and well-pressed flower specimens.</image:title>

      <image:title>Blog - Working as a Botanical Illustrator Part 2 - starting to draw: large elements - Taking a measurement using proportional dividers set to “2.” This will give a measurement half that over the original, when the dividers are flipped over to their smaller point opening. As I’m left-handed, I use the dividers with my right hand so that I don’t have to put my pencil down during this process.</image:title>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ffb58cf6296c62df8783b32/1631808491167-ZZJL6I1I5R1AQ230G7P1/20210527_105817.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Blog - Working as a Botanical Illustrator Part 2 - starting to draw: large elements - Now you can see, an instant one-half reduction of the subject matter, mapped out by the other end of the dividers. If you are enlarging an object, simply use the dividers the other way.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Proportional dividers, once used by all technical draughtspeople when such drawings were done by hand, are now quite rare and therefore expensive to buy. A less expensive option is to use standard dividers - these will enable you to enlarge but not reduce so easily, as you can measure a part and then mark it out twice, three times, etc.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Working as a Botanical Illustrator Part 2 - starting to draw: large elements - Here’s how the illustration is looking at the moment. It has been darkened a lot after scanning so that it is visible on your screen, whereas in fact it is drawn quite lightly in 2H pencil. A lot of erasing has taken place, and at one point I moved the whole frame to the left to fit something in, rather than re-draw everything.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Now I have started the envisage where the smaller details will fit in. The leaflets still require some refining and addition of details, as do the inflorescence and infructescence, but the illustration is well on its way. Remember when handling herbarium specimens such as these, to be extremely careful. Look at those long, delicate drip-tips - so easy to damage. Herbarium specimens are precious and irreplaceable. Next …… drawing the smaller elements and details</image:caption>

      <image:title>About - Lucy T Smith</image:title>
      <image:caption>Lucy T Smith is an Australian botanical artist and illustrator, resident for the past twenty-four years in the UK. Since 1999, she has worked as a freelance botanical artist for the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, producing botanical illustrations in both pen and ink, and watercolour. Her illustrations have been published in many scientific journals worldwide. She has received many awards for her artwork, including the Jill Smythies Award for Botanical Illustration (Linnean Society), two gold medals from the Royal Horticultural Society, and First Prize (twice) in the Margaret Flockton Award for Botanical Illustration. In 2020 she was awarded the Botanical Illustrator Award for Excellence in Scientific Botanical Art from American Society of Botanical Artists. As well as illustrating, she leads the teaching of the botanical illustration programme at Kew Gardens. She has previously taught for The English Gardening School, and the Chelsea School of Botanical Art, as well as given workshops for many amateur and professional groups. Lucy takes on custom commissions. Notable commissions include a 90th birthday present for Sir David Attenborough. Lucy is a regular judge for botanical art exhibitions including the Society of Botanical Artists’ annual Plantae exhibition in London. Lucy’s first how-to book “Botanical Sketchbooks, an Artist’s Guide to Plant Studies,” has just been published by The Crowood Press.</image:caption>
